Outside of the service academies, Tennessee leads the FBS in rushing with 298.7 yards per game. Josh Heupel and his staff have built an elite offensive machine in Knoxville predicated on establishing the run. Through three weeks, the Vols are averaging 44.3 carries per game at a dominant 6.74 yards per carry.
While the Veer & Shoot is famed for sideline-to-sideline spacing, the true engine behind this year's ground attack is how Tennessee manipulates the interior box by inserting Tight Ends. By getting into 12-personnel and double sniffer alignments, they manufacture advantageous blocking angles, get hats on hats in the run game, and punish light boxes.
Outside Zone Lead
Heupel has dialed up Outside Zone variations 19 times this season, producing 155 yards (8.16 YPC) and an efficient +0.076 EPA/play.
Kennesaw State’s defense gave them a Tite Front, so Tennessee got into a double sniffer backfield and ran Outside Zone Double Lead.
