If you ever watched Georgia Tech’s 2025 offense, you may have noticed Georgia Tech’s running backs having super wide splits. OC Buster Faulkner has a method to his madness and here are 3 reasons why he utilizes the wide splits for his running backs.
1. Counter Footwork
On GH Counter with normal splits, running backs usually have to take a counter step, and then try to follow the pulling H through the hole. With wide splits, the running back’s footwork lines up perfectly and he has some speed running through the hole.
2. Widen the Box
The backside linebacker has to honor the wide split. By running GH Counter the opposite way, the wide split helps take the backside linebacker out of the play.
3. Route Access
Because defenses still have to honor the run, wide splits help running backs with routes from the backfield. They have easier access to get out on passing concepts and gain better leverage on defenders.
